About Mrs. Sidney

Hello! I'm excited to be your child's ESL teacher!  This year I am teaching kindergarten, first and second grades at WES.  I am originally from Southeast Michigan, but I moved to Cary, North Carolina 10 years ago to pursue my career in education.  I love to go back and visit with my family, especially in the summertime!  I'm married to my husband, Jeff and we have a daughter named, Lyla who was born April 25, 2017. In my free time, I play sand volleyball, pickleball and I love to hike with my dog, Cooper.  I have traveled to many places including Sweden (twice), Mexico, Turks and Caicos, Bahamas, and many U.S. states.  I would love to travel around Europe one day!

What is a LEP Student?

A student who has been classified as LEP is Limited English Proficient.  The term is used interchangeably with ELL (English Language Learners).

How does a student become classified as LEP?

If a language, other than English is listed on the HLS (Home Language Survey), that child should be recommended for testing.  Upon initial testing (WAPT), a child may qualify for comprehensive or moderate  (pull-out services) or transitional (remains in the classroom with interventions and possible testing accommodations) services.  Test scores will help determine which type of service a child receives.  Initial testing will also determine if a child even qualifies for LEP services.  Students with exceptional scores are considered to have “Never” been LEP.

How can a student exit LEP status?

Every year, roughly between February 1 – mid March, I will administer our annual test (ACCESS) to ALL LEP students.  I usually receive their scores the last week of school.  Depending on scores, a student can exit LEP status.

LEP Plans

Once a student is identified as LEP, we need to make a LEP plan for him.  This plan will include the classroom interventions and your child's scores from the ACCESS assessment. A copy of this plan is sent home with students at the beginning of the year.

Progress Reports

At the end of the 2nd and 4th quarters, you will receive progress reports for students whom I directly serve.  In these, I will communicate the progress your child has made in acquiring English language skills.
